The Judging Criteria

At the Irish Pod Awards, we’re committed to celebrating and recognising the quality in Irish podcasting. Every submission is evaluated with fairness, consistency, and transparency, ensuring that each nominee is given an equal opportunity to shine. Our experienced panel of judges assess each podcast with a structured scoring system across several defined criteria.

Core Judging Criteria

Each podcast is assessed based on the following core criteria:

creativity and originality

This criterion evaluates a podcast’s ability to offer something fresh and distinctive. In a crowded space, creativity is what sets a podcast apart, giving it a unique voice and appeal.

Key factors for judging Creativity & Originality include:

  • Innovative Format: Does the podcast present its content in an inventive or unexpected way? We look for approaches that keep listeners engaged, whether through unique storytelling techniques, creative sound design, or unconventional episode structures.

  • Original Perspective: How does the podcast differentiate itself within its genre? Originality could mean introducing new angles on familiar topics or taking creative risks that enrich the content.

  • Standout Elements: Are there features that make the podcast truly memorable? This might include interesting use of music, humor, or creative twists that make the podcast stand out in a way listeners don’t forget.

production quality

A high-quality production enhances the listening experience, ensuring that audiences stay immersed in the content without distractions. Production quality isn’t just about polish; it’s about how well the technical aspects serve the podcast’s goals.

Key factors for judging Production Quality include:

  • Sound Clarity: Is the audio clear and well-balanced, without disruptive background noise? Quality sound is essential for a professional listening experience.

  • Editing Precision: Does the editing enhance the content’s flow and pacing? We consider whether edits are seamless and if transitions feel natural.

  • Production Suitability: Is the level of production appropriate for the podcast’s theme and audience? Whether it’s a highly produced narrative or a conversational format, production quality should align with the content’s purpose.

content and relevance

Content quality is the backbone of any great podcast. This criterion looks at how effectively a podcast delivers meaningful, valuable content that resonates with its audience.

Key factors for judging Content and Relevance include:

  • Value and Depth: Does the podcast offer insights, information, or entertainment that’s genuinely valuable? We look for content that goes beyond surface-level discussions to deliver depth and substance.

  • Alignment with Audience Interests: Is the content tailored to its intended listeners? Effective podcasts understand and cater to their audience, meeting their needs and interests in relevant ways.

  • Consistency in Quality: Is the podcast reliably high-quality across episodes? Consistency show

host presentation and engagement

The host’s role is pivotal to a podcast’s success. This criterion evaluates the host’s ability to connect with the audience and deliver content in an engaging, impactful way.

Key factors for judging Content and Relevance include:

  • Engagement Skills: Does the host capture and hold the listener’s attention? We consider whether the host uses storytelling, humor, or empathy to keep listeners engaged.

  • Clarity and Delivery: Is the host’s delivery clear and well-paced? The host’s voice, tone, and energy play a major role in creating an enjoyable listening experience.

  • Authenticity and Connection: Does the host bring a sense of authenticity that resonates with listeners? A great host builds rapport and fosters a sense of connection, which can make listeners feel personally invested in the podcast.

audience connection

This criterion examines how well a podcast resonates with its audience, fostering a sense of loyalty, community, and connection that goes beyond just listenership.

Key factors for judging Audience Connection include:

  • Listener Engagement: Does the podcast actively encourage audience participation or response? Podcasts that connect with their audience often invite feedback, respond to listener questions, or create interactive experiences.

  • Community Building: Has the podcast cultivated a loyal following or sense of community? Whether through social media, live events, or listener shoutouts, a strong audience connection often involves building a community.

  • Emotional Impact: Does the podcast evoke emotions, whether through laughter, empathy, or inspiration? A podcast that leaves a lasting emotional impression creates a meaningful connection with listeners.

impact and influence

Impact and Influence criterion measures the power a podcast holds to inspire, inform, and engage. This goes beyond mere listenership—it’s about the podcast’s ability to create meaningful change or foster discussions that resonate with its audience and the wider community.

Key factors for judging Impact and Influence include:

  • Audience Impact: How does the podcast affect its listeners? Does it leave them with new insights, perspectives, or inspiration? We look for podcasts that spark curiosity, encourage positive action, or bring value that listeners carry beyond each episode.

  • Influence within the Category: Has the podcast set a standard, trend, or approach that others in its genre look up to? Influence in a category might mean introducing innovative formats, popularizing important discussions, or leading on emerging topics that define its field.

  • Community and Social Awareness: We recognise podcasts that tackle important issues or raise awareness about meaningful causes. Does the podcast shed light on topics that need more attention, bring voice to underrepresented groups, or educate listeners on complex subjects?

  • Lasting Impact: Podcasts with true influence resonate long after the episode ends. This can mean influencing how listeners think, creating loyalty in its fan base, or leading discussions across other media and platforms. Podcasts with a lasting impact leave a footprint that adds to the value and relevance of the podcasting community as a whole.

multiple judges per category

To ensure a fair and balanced evaluation, each podcast is reviewed by multiple judges with expertise in the specific category. Scores are then averaged to create an overall score for each entry, ensuring no single judge has undue influence on the final results.

Any significant scoring discrepancies are carefully reviewed for consistency.

weighted scoring system

Public Vote and Scoring

We believe in celebrating audience enthusiasm while maintaining a rigorous, professional judging process. That’s why we have included a Public Vote component, allowing listeners to support their favorite podcasts and feel involved in the awards.

This year, due to tighter timelines, we would have loved more time to maximise the impact of the Public Vote. While we had to make adjustments to fit within the schedule, we’re excited to give audiences the chance to weigh in. The Public Vote accounts for 10% of the final score —a meaningful influence that celebrates audience enthusiasm, while still maintaining a balanced approach.

The remaining 90% of each podcast’s score is determined by our expert panel, who evaluate submissions based on criteria like Creativity, Production Quality, Content Relevance, Host Presentation, Audience Connection, and Impact.
